HYPER-REAL WAX HEAD - Roxman Gatt
I was commissioned by London based conceptual Artist, Roxman Gatt to make a hyper-real wax head of the artist, much like a Madam Tussauds wax work. This was a huge undertaking and I had to journey through many technical processes to reach the desired outcome.
Rather than sculpt Roxman from scratch in clay I decided to take a life casting instead which saved a considerable amount of time. A life mould was taken in alginate and later cast into plaster.
To enable me to rework the head further and sculpt details in such as eyelids, I had to cast a soft version of the head in plastaline. With a soft model, I could now cut out the eyes and connect the ears etc. Once I was happy with the re-sculpted head I took another silicon mould which became my master mould in which to reproduce the final wax cast.
Glass eyes were inserted into the wax head and real human hair was inserted one by one with a needle to form the head hair, lashes and eyebrows of the head.
This piece most certainly was a labour of love!
